Al-Mudhill
The Humiliator, The One Who Abases
Root ذ ل ل (dh-l-l). Lane describes the root dh-l-l as implying lowness, with dhalla meaning ‘he, or it, was or became low, base, abject’. Dhalla is contrasted with ʿazza. Al-Mudhill, in form IV, is the One who abases. The related word dhilla refers to abasement as in Qur'an 2:61. Dhalūl, meaning made tractable, subservient, is used for the earth in Qur'an 67:15. Adhilla, meaning humble, appears in Qur'an 5:54. The name Al-Mudhill is not found in the Qur'an. The verb tudhillu, ‘You abase’, is used of Allah in Qur'an 3:26.
