Al-Jabbār
The Compeller, The Restorer
Root ج ب ر (j-b-r). Lane's first sense of jabara is ‘he set a bone; reduced it from a fractured state’; the same root gives ajbara, to compel. The related noun jabr means the setting of a broken bone or restoring. Jabbārīn refers to tyrannical and overbearing people, as seen in Qur'an 5:22. Classical explanations of the divine name combine the senses of compelling and of mending, restoring. Jabbār is used of Allah in the Qur'an only in 59:23. 59:23 names Him ‘the Compeller’.
