Al-Muʾakhkhir
The Delayer, The One Who Puts Back
Root أ خ ر (ʾ-kh-r). Lane gives akhkhara (form II) as ‘he made to go back... put, or placed, behind, or after... made to be last’. Ākhir means ‘last’. The verb phrase yuʾakhkhiruhum, found in Qur'an 14:42, means ‘He defers them’. Taʾakhkhara, which appears in Qur'an 48:2, translates to ‘came later’. Al-Muʾakhkhir as a name for Allah is not in the Qur'an. The related verb form is used of Allah, as in verse 14:42. With Al-Muqaddim, it is in the Prophet's supplication ‘anta l-muqaddimu wa anta l-muʾakhkhir’ (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 1120, 6317).
