Al-Mubdiʾ
The Originator, The Initiator
Root ب د أ (b-d-ʾ). Lane gives the primary sense of the root b-d-ʾ as ‘he began with it; made it to have precedence, or to be first’. The verb badaʾa means ‘he began’, as seen in Qur'an 29:20 concerning creation. Yubdiʾu means ‘he originates’, used of Allah in Qur'an 85:13. Another related term, yabdaʾu, means ‘he begins’, and appears in Qur'an 10:4. Though Al-Mubdiʾ is not found in the Qur'an as a noun or name, these verbs are used of God, such as in Qur'an 85:13: ‘It is He who originates and repeats’.
